Established in 1880 by Lewis R Eady, Lewis Eady was the oldest family-owned and operated music business in Australasia until its acquisition by Chiron Group New Zealand in 2019.
Lewis Eady has always focused on the sale of quality pianos, print music and classical instruments. For over 100 years, it has been and still is the only New Zealand agent for Steinway & Sons and Steinway's subsidiaries, Boston and Essex pianos. Since its humble beginnings in 1880, the business has expanded to include a Guitar Department, a Music School, a Charitable Trust committed to supporting young, emerging musicians in New Zealand, and the country's first-ever Steinway Technical Department.
Founder Lewis R Eady arrived in New Zealand in 1865 from England with his parents and two brothers, Arthur and William. Lewis worked in his brother Arthur's music business before setting up his own music business specialising in selling pianos in the Auckland city centre. As the nature of retailing in the city centre changed, so did the business, and Lewis Eady moved premises several times before finally settling into the new family-owned property at 75 Great South Road in 2001.
Over four generations, Lewis Eady has influenced the New Zealand music industry through their generous sponsorship of pianos to key venues such as the Auckland Town Hall, establishing the Music section at the Auckland Central Library, among many others. Lewis Eady's devotion to music has undoubtedly instilled a genuine appreciation of music in generations of New Zealanders.
Lewis Eady celebrated its 140th Anniversary in 2020 and looks forward to another 140 years of creating musical experiences.
